BACKGROUND



This report, commissioned by Leeds City Council, examines the value and volume of tourism to Leeds district and the impact of that expenditure in the local economy in 2006. The district level economic figures presented in this report have been derived utilising the Cambridge Economic Impact Model.

THE VOLUME OF TOURISM IN LEEDS



The headline figures for volume of tourism in Leeds in 2006 are as follows:

* Volume of staying trips estimated at 1.4 million trips, 84% of which were made by domestic visitors and 16% by overseas visitors.

* Staying visitors spent an estimated 5.5 million nights in the district.

* An estimated 10.9 million day trips were made to and within the region.

THE VALUE OF TOURISM IN LEEDS



The headline figures for value of tourism in Leeds in 2006 are as follows:

* Overall value of tourism was an estimated £831.9 million.

* Staying visitors generated an estimated £280 million expenditure.

* Day visitors generated an estimated £513 million of expenditure.

* Other tourism activity accounted for approximately £38.8 million expenditure.
